From The Gulliver Code
Origins
The Gulliver Code originated in work for my PhD thesis, "Swift's Comic Flaw," submitted to Trinity College, Dublin in 1971.
Along with my colleague Richard Evers, we have decided to build this online forum on The Gulliver Code. Over the next few years, we will be releasing solutions to the mysteries of Gulliver's Travels, as well as a history of cryptography, and the uses of the "ars magna" by Swift and his contemporaries.
In my doctoral thesis, I attempted to play down the anagrams, while accepting them as a very probable construction on the part of Swift. To my mind, Henrion's discovery has exciting possibilities for all aspects of Swift criticism, and can help redress the critical wrongs of the last two hundred years, showing Gulliver's Travels for what it is, a great political satire and something even more - a comedy on the human condition.
